The Palm Beach Pops Resumes ‘Music & You Program’
This Week Promoting Music Education in Four Elementary Schools in Jupiter, North Palm Beach
& Palm Beach Gardens
(West Palm Beach, FL – January 9, 2014) Just four months after the sudden loss of Maestro Bob Lappin, The Palm Beach Pops is now resuming his beloved The Music & You In-School Youth Education Program for Palm Beach County underserved school districts.
The popular four-week music education program will be held at schools in North County during the month of January:
+ Dwight D. Eisenhower Elementary School in Palm Beach Gardens
+ North Palm Elementary School in North Palm Beach
+ Jerry Thomas Elementary School in Jupiter
+ Beacon Cove Intermediate Elementary School in Jupiter
Following the four weekly sessions – which include in-school lessons from each section of the orchestra (brass, woodwinds, strings and percussion) – a Finale concert will be held on February 7 at the Eissey Campus Theatre at Palm Beach State College in Palm Beach Gardens. This concert is a major event because all of the young students, who spent the previous month studying the importance of the rudiments of music will experience a live, full orchestral concert that wraps up all of the concepts that were taught in the schools.
The Palm Beach Pops will bus all of the students to the venue for concert at no cost to the schools or taxpayers.
Please note that all of the Music & You in-school sessions and the finale concert are for children only and are not open to the public.
The Music & You Program correlates music with social studies, literature, character education science and math. It enables students to develop an understanding of the rudiments of melody, harmony and rhythm by listening to a variety of music, including Bach, Mozart, Gershwin, Duke Ellington and more modern music, such as the theme from Harry Potter – all of which conveys to students how the history of American music relates to modern musical genres. In fact, more than 90,000 local school children have already attended and actively participated in these program concerts.
Shortly after the death of Maestro Lappin last August, The Palm Beach Pops, Florida’s premier Pops orchestra, announced that it was canceling the 2013-14 subscription concert season but would continue to focus on music education in schools and seek additional performance opportunities. The Palm Beach Pops is a not-for-profit corporation supported solely through the generosity of individual donations, institutional grants and concert income.
At the Kravis Center on February 4, the Palm Beach Pops will present “The Music Lives On,” a tribute concert to the legacy of the late Maestro. “Thisis very important to all of us who loved Bob Lappin,” said Patricia Becker, Executive Vice President of The Palm Beach Pops Board of Directors. “This is the way Bob would have wanted it: the board actively moving forward, seeking new concert opportunities and continuing his legacy by promoting and expanding the music education program in local elementary schools.”
The one-time concert will feature Guest Conductor Lee Musiker, the Grammy and Emmy-winning Music Director/Pianist for Tony Bennett, Barbara Cook, Mel Tormé, Jerry Lewis and Buddy Rich. Many of Maestro Lappin’s favorite performers will participate, including Broadway star Christine Andreas, Big Band singer Lynn Roberts, acclaimed pianist and vocalist Tony DeSare, world renowned trumpeter Longineu Parsons, former Pops concertmaster/Radio City Music Hall veteran and violinist Mary Rowell, and the extraordinary musicians that have been longtime members of The Palm Beach Pops family.
Tickets for this concert start at $29 and are available by calling the Kravis Center Box Office at 561.832.7469.
